A LITTLE HISTORY....

Ben's passion for cycling was first inspired by his Grandfather, Norman. Norman enjoyed training and racing on his road bike with his mates throughout Victoria in the 1940s, collecting a few podiums along the way. Growing up Ben loved riding and modifying his bmx, fixies and old racers. Ben fell head over heels for his high school sweetheart, Glenda, and gave her a sample of his workmanship, a reconditioned road bike for Christmas. Glenda approved and accepted his hand in marriage a few years later.

Ben’s passion for cycling expanded into road, triathlons and mountain biking, competing in races throughout Queensland and New South Wales. Ben and Glenda’s community involvement began not long after their wedding in 1998, supporting the growth of triathlon in the North Queensland region, assisting the NQ Triathlon development officer in conducting junior triathlons for a number of years. Ben also supported and competed in regional events including the Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festivals and the Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride, whilst making lifelong friendships.

In 2004, BNG Sports was born, bringing world renowned brands into Australia for the first time. Ben and Glenda ran a successful importing and wholesaling business whilst becoming parents to two daughters, Kate and Georgia. Seeing opportunities in their home town of Townsville, they opened their first retail outlet in Railway Estate in 2007. Today their business resides in the Hyde Park Centre.  As you step inside their store you will be see a couple of pictures of Grandpa Norman with his mates on their racing bikes. You will also find various business awards around the place for Ben, the Townsville Chamber of Commerce Young Business Man of the Year, and Glenda, the North Queensland Business Womens - Business Partner of the Year. Other recent awards include the Number 1 Met Helmet dealer in Australia and the Number 1 Bicycle Centre in Australia.

BNG Sports community involvement in more recent years include major sponsors of the Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride raising much needed funds for the Children's Cancer Istitute of Australia; and the Mates on Mountain Bikes raising funds for the Royal Flying Doctor's Service. BNG Sports also provide sponsorship and support to a variety of sporting clubs, events and charities around the North Queensland region.

Ben's passion, expertise and knowledge gained through his experience and certification in Bicycle Mechanics is broadened by his extensive knowledge and competencies in Professional Bike Fitting, providing clients optimal riding performance and comfort through 3D bike fitting. Ben also plays a critical role in the development of cycling in the North Queensland region providing certified training programs to both juniors and adults from beginner to national level.

If you ask Ben and Glenda why they love their business - their answer is - simply for the love of cycling and people and connecting these two elements with passion.

A few people have worked out what the “BNG” stands for in BNG Sports. Have you?
